Bristol Steinway & Sons at St George’s

Learning more about piano mechanisms

“I went on a really inspiring visit to see Ulrich Gerhartz of Steinway and Sons piano makers at St George’s, Bristol. More and more our instrument for the Clifton Suspension Bridge is resembling a hybrid piano-harp as so it seemed to make sense to learn from Steinway’s Cheif Technician Ulrich about the inner workings of a piano. I was particularly fascinated by the felt covered hammer mechanism which ‘dongs’ the strings inside the piano, imagining a giant one made especially to sound the hangers of the Clifton Bridge.” Di Mainstone
